The “Information and Democracy Declaration” prepared under the leadership of international Reporters Without Borders (RSF) was shared with the public at the International Paris Peace Forum Summit. The new declaration, which was prepared out of the need to update the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in its 70th year, was supported by France, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Lithuania, Lebanon, Latvia, Senegal, Tunisia, Burkina Faso and Costa Rica.
The declaration predicts updated protections for elements and values that influence the right to information (as an undeniable element of democracy in today’s societies) such as “private life,” “transparency” and “pluralist society.” RSF Turkey Representative Erol Önderoğlu indicated that the current version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights does not respond to the current needs of the information society in terms of rights of journalists and stated that the ‘Information and Democracy Declaration’ was prepared with the aim to fulfill that deficiency.
