The first Black Monday took place on May 2, 2016.

The Thought Freedom Network of Turkey has started its 3 protest chains, #AyşeIsNotAlone, Support Protest for Academics, and Civil Disobedience Protest for Dündar and Gül with 87 participants from İstanbul, Ankara and İzmir. The network is currently in preparation to repeat these protests. The first target has been announced as 4 April 2016, Monday. However, the short time in between did not allow for an effective press announcement, therefore the start date has been changed to 2 May 2016.

A group of intellectuals, who reacted against journalists Can Dündar and Erdem Gül standing trial with two life sentence claims, denounced themselves to the Prosecutor’s Office in Ankara and Istanbul. "If the things they wrote constitute a crime, we commit the same crime," stated the group.
