Two female students staying at Nilüfer Hatun Women’s Student Dormitory at Gebze Technical University protested after saying they had been expelled for opposing pressure and irregularities by the dormitory administration. The students said they complained to CİMER that food did not meet hygiene standards, that they were prevented from feeding stray animals, and that their signatures were copied to make it appear that they had attended events they had not participated in. They said the dormitory administration subjected them to systematic pressure and mobbing and expelled them before their appeal processes were completed on grounds such as “moving the refrigerator” and “soiling bed sheets.” Students from Kocaeli University and various political parties supported the protest. Security guards prevented executives of Eğitim Sen Kocaeli Branch No. 2, who went to the campus in solidarity with the students, from entering the university. Branch Chair Sinan Kaya called for an independent investigation into the students’ allegations and an end to obstruction of union activities. The students said they would continue their struggle until they were allowed to return to the dormitory.
