Nine people, including former deputy mayor Erkan Özkan, were detained in the second wave of an investigation into İzmir’s Menderes Municipality. Sixteen people, including Mayor İlkay Çiçek, had previously been detained as part of the investigation conducted by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. Ten suspects, including Çiçek, deputy mayors, some municipal administrators and council members, had been arrested after being referred to the courthouse, while the remaining suspects had been released under judicial control. Lawyer Elifnur Gürcü, who was detained later, had also been arrested.
