Kuşadası Mayor Ömer Günel was taken into custody on March 13 and arrested on March 16 as part of an investigation into allegations of bribery and embezzlement. The Ministry of the Interior suspended Günel from his duties on the same day as a precautionary measure. In the investigation led by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, several municipal officials and businesspeople were also arrested along with Günel. One municipal official, however, was released on judicial supervision as part of the investigation.
