IFÖD: Social media companies have become censorship tools

The Freedom of Expression Association published its report titled “Digital Compliance Regime: Social Media Providers in Turkey and the Illusion of Transparency” on January 13. The report, prepared by Prof. Dr. Yaman Akdeniz and Ozan Güven, found that platforms such as Facebook, X, TikTok, YouTube, and LinkedIn comply with the state’s censorship requests at a high rate in Turkey. According to the report, social media providers made content invisible not only through court orders but also through algorithmic restrictions; meanwhile, the Telecommunications Authority (BTK) concealed transparency reports from the public on the grounds of “commercial secrecy.” IFÖD called on companies to be transparent and not to be complicit in violations of freedom of expression.
