Former Özgür Gündem Editor-In-Chief Reyhan Çapan, who was previously sentenced to imprisonment in accordance with Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK), was taken into custody in Hopa district of Artvin. According to the news by Mezopotamya Agency, there is a warrant against Çapan and she is expected to be taken to Hopa Prosecutor’s Office today.
The verdict in the case at Istanbul 2nd Assize Court due to “denigrating Turkishness, the Republic of Turkey and the institutions of state” in accordance with TCK Article 301 was announced on March 29 and Çapan was sentenced to 2 years and three months of imprisonment due to committing the same crime more than once. Çapan is also on trial at Istanbul 14th Assize Court in the lawsuit filed against Özgür Gündem Newspaper, which was shut down with an emergency decree. The latest hearing of the case was held on May 7.
