Amnesty International organized a panel at Gönen Hotel with the topic, “Journalism and press freedom in Turkey.” The two-session panel was organized with the support of Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), PEN International, I Am Journalist, Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK) Press-Labour Union, Contemporary Journalists Association, Free Journalists Initiative, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Press Council and Article 19. The journalists stated that they will continue to resist the oppression.

Journalist Ahmet Şık, Gökçer Tahincioğlu from Hürriyet Newspaper, Timur Soykan from Posta Newspaper, Tunca Öğreten from Diken and Sarah Clarke from PEN International participated in the first session with the topic, “Following the news under threat” as guest speakers under the moderation of Atty. Hürrem Sönmez. The moderation of the second session with the topic, “Media language and organization” was moderated by journalist Uğur Güç with guest speakers bianet.org writer Nadire Mater, Free Journalists Initiative Spokesman Hakkı Boltan, linguist and writer Necmiye Alpay and Agos Newspaper writer Pakrat Estukyan.

Journalist Tunca Öğreten from diken.com.tr explained his custody process. “My dialogue with Deniz Yücel was considered a crime. We are on trial as six people. All six have charges against them due to a paragraph of writing,” said Öğreten. Journalist Ahmet Şık spoke about his experience as well. “More than 100 journalists under arrest… We have so little number of media organizations as alternatives. This is a horrifying picture,” said Şık.
