The US-based think tank Freedom House has released its “Freedom in the World 2022” index. The report, titled, “The Global Expansion of Authoritarian Rule” reveals that freedoms have been decreasing globally for 16 consecutive years. According to the report, in which 195 countries were evaluated, the number of “not-free” countries doubled compared to 2020, reaching 56. Nearly 38 percent of the world’s population lives in “not-free” countries, the highest rate since 1997. Turkey, which is listed in the category of “not-free countries” in the report this year, is the least free country in Europe and has regressed by 31 points in the last 10 years. Turkey is the third country with the highest amount of decline, after Mali and the Central Republic of Africa.
