The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) issued a decree of rights violation on the media blackout issued against news on the “corruption” investigation (December 17-25) started against four ministers at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. The high court decided that the freedom of expression of journalist Banu Güven was violated, as her job is to report and announce news on such matters. In the application made by Banu Güven, Yaman Akdeniz and Kerem Altıparmak, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) decided that journalist Güven’s freedom of expression was violated as her job is to report such matters to the public, and didn’t issue a rights violation decree for Akdeniz and Altıparmak, indicating that they were not journalists but academics. The high court sentenced Turkey to pay 1500 Euros of compensation to Banu Güven and member judge Egidijus Kūris put an annotation on the decree, indicating that the freedom of expression of the academics were violated as well.
