Two of the lawsuits filed against those wanting to support the hunger strike of academic Nuriye Gülmen and educator Semih Özakça after their dismissal from public service with emergency decrees were concluded with verdicts of acquittal.

A lawsuit had been filed against 19 people, who gathered at Ankara Yüksel Street on May 22, 2017 to support Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça, at Ankara 15th Criminal Court of First Instance due to “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911.” The court issued the acquittal of the defendants. The reasoned decision stated, “As the meeting was unarmed and peaceful without an attack as protected by Article 34 of the Constitution and Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and as there is no concrete evidence that it disrupted public order and peace or that there was real risk of danger, the meeting has to be evaluated within the scope of freedom of expression and freedom of demonstration.”
