According to the information published on the 2018 Rights Violations Report launched by Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu, 3.110 violations of the right to life was experienced in 2018.
Here are some of the data that stands out in the report:
According to the information shared within the “freedom of expression and thought,” there are 127 journalists, writers and publishers under arrest. The number of released journalists in 2018 is 48 and the number of lawsuits filed against journalists is at least 9 according to the report; while the number of detained journalists is at least 150 and the number of arrested journalists 258.
22 people were arrested and convicted due to “activities within freedom of expression”; at least 1377 people were detained due to their social media posts and were arrested. 24 people were convicted due to their social media posts, 7 press-media institutions were raided and one newspaper was pulled off shelves.
Four people are in detainment, 118 people are in prison and 20 people lost their lives due to random fires, stop warnings and extrajudicial executions. 12 people were wounded, two of whom are children.
565 people, five of them civilians, have lost their lives and 466 people were wounded within “armed clashes.” Two people have lost their lives within “unsolved murders.”
8 people, two of them children, have lost their lives and 18 were wounded in incidents caused by police and military vehicles.
Again according to the report, 1923 people have lost their lives in work accidents.
440 cases of violence were identified against women. Three violations were made within hate crimes and 88 rights violations were identified against refugees.
Torture and mistreatment in prisons were included in the report as well. According to the data announced, 1162 people were tortured under detainment and at least 1159 people were exposed to torture and mistreatment in prisons.
