Human Rights Association (IHD) and the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TIHV) made a common declaration on June 26, International Day in Support of Victims of Torture that was declared by the United Nations (UN) in 1997, reminding Turkey of its responsibilities. The statement indicated that Turkey had accepted the “Convention Against Torture” in 1988, that it banned torture in the Constitution and the Criminal Code but that torture remains as a systematic practice of government. The rights organizations further stated that there is serious increase in torture applied at official centers of detainment and that the rate of torture applications in unofficial detainment centers and elsewhere reached a dimension that was not seen before, saying, “as a result of the political power’s style of governing that is based on pressure and control, the entire country has almost become a place for torture.” The rights organizations also listed suggestions on the fight against torture.
