Human Rights Watch (HRW) launched its annual report. The 2018 World Report magnifies the situation of human rights in the world and points out to the increase in authoritarian right-wing politicians in the world.
An article on the content of the report was written by HRW Executive Director Kenneth Roth. In the article, Turkey is handled together with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Russia and China under the title, “populist and autocrats fill a gap.” Erdoğan is shown as an example in the article through the statements, “In locations where domestic resistance is oppressed and international watch is non-existent, populist powers against human rights dominate.” Erdoğan is indicated to “weaken the democratic system in Turkey with his personal immunity and the European Union (EU) is focused on Turkey’s help in order to prevent refugees from fleeing to Europe.”
The findings on Turkey in the report include the abuse of Anti-Terror Laws; targeting, trialing and conviction of journalists and rights advocates. The report further indicates that European Court of Human Rights verdicts are being ignored.
