Seven years has passed after the Roboski Massacre in Uludere district of Şırnak, with 34 deaths and 4 injuries due to the airstrike of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK).
Following the bombardment on December 28, 2011, an investigation was started by Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation was sent to the General Staff’s Military Prosecutor’s Office 1.5 years later with a verdict of non-jurisdiction. The military Prosecutor’s Office then issued a verdict of non-prosecution on the file in January 2014; the objections of lawyers were denied. The file was then carried to the Constitutional Court in 2014. However, the application was denied due to “documentary deficiencies in the file.” Lastly, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) found the application on the Roboski file “unacceptable” as well and thus the “policy of impunity” continues. During this process, at least 26 Roboski-resident families requesting “justice” faced investigations, detainments and judicial fines due to “insulting the President” and “denigrating the Turkish nation and state.” The Roboski Association, founded by the families losing their relatives in the massacre, was shut down with an emergency decree.
Even the massacre’s perpetrators were not identified and no one was prosecuted. Meanwhile, the pain of Roboski residents, who lost their relatives in the massacre, is still fresh and their expectation for justice never fades.
