A lawsuit was filed against People’s Democratic Party (HDP) former MP Osman Baydemir due to the speeches he gave at the group meeting in Van as well as at the “Conscience and Justice Watch.” The indictment, accepted by Van 5th Criminal Court of First Instance, Baydemir was charged with “public denigration of the Turkish Nation, the Republic of Turkey and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT)” in accordance with Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code with a claim of imprisonment for up to six years. Baydemir had lost his seat at the Parliament on April 19, 2018 after serving as Diyarbakır Mayor between the years 2004 and 2014 and being elected as Urfa MP in 2015.
