Imam Mehmet Can Demir was acquitted of the charge of “making illegal organisation propaganda” in the first hearing of the lawsuit filed against him due to praying at the funeral ceremony of a PKK member, who died during the clashes and was buried in a mass grave in Van Seyrantepe Neighborhood. 72-year-old Demir indicated that he performed the burial procedure according to the religious rules, without looking at who the funeral belonged to, saying, “I am an imam and I did my job.” Defendant lawyer Mahmut Kaçan indicated that such lawsuits have no legal basis and that the security forces and the Prosecutors approach such situations through criminal perspectives, stating, “I hope that this decree becomes a precedent and such lawsuits are no longer filed.”
