The European Court of Human Rights ruled that the right to freedom of expression, compensation for unlawful detention, as well as the right to freedom and security of Die Welt reporter Deniz Yücel, who was imprisoned for one year in Silivri prison on charges of “making propaganda for a terrorist organization” and “public incitement towards resentment and hostility”, were violated. The court issued 12,300 Euros to be paid to the journalist for non-pecuniary damage and 1000 Euros for court expenses.
