Cumhuriyet Daily’s former owner Orhan Erinç, former reporter Pelin Ünker and Yenigün News Agency Press and Publishing Inc. were sentenced to 10 thousand TL compensation each due to the news published on the newspaper related to the “Paradise Papers.” Anatolian 24th Civil Court of First Instance decided that the news content “attacked the personal rights of” Justice and Development Party (AKP) Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor candidate Binali Yıldırım and his sons.
The news published on the newspaper on November 7-8, 2017, with the headline, “Not local, not national,” Yıldırım, who was the Prime Minister at the time, was indicated to own offshore companies in Malta together with his sons. Yıldırım confirmed the existence of such companies and stated, “Maritime is a global business. This has nothing secret about it and they are trying to create a perception as if it’s hidden.”
