Amnesty International invited Justice Minister Abdülhamit Gül to “use his authority for the protection of freedom of expression, press freedom and the right to fair trial” within the “Freedom for Journalists” campaign.
The petition campaign that includes the letter written, addressing Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül, calls Gül to “release all journalists and media representatives arrested for performing their profession and to end all arrests alike.”
The letter states:
“Dear Minister of Justice Mr. Abdulhamit Gül,
I am asking you to release all journalists and media representatives arrested to be put on trial for performing their professions and to provide the end of all arrests alike.
The long-term arrest of at least 150 journalists, media representatives and executives is arbitrary and they should not be penalized without conviction. Turkey is currently the country with the most number of arrested journalists in the world. I am in serious worry that many are facing charges within the Anti-Terror Law without basis, only for using their rights of freedom of expression.
I ask you to use all your authority to protect freedom of expression and press freedom, to respect the right to fair trial and for no arrested person to be kept under inhumane conditions.
Sincerely,”
