Cumhuriyet Daily Ankara Representative Erdem Gül was acquitted in the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Trucks Case he was on trial with Can Dündar.
In the case at Istanbul 14th Assize Court, Dündar had been sentenced to 5 years and 10 months, Gül to 5 years of imprisonment due to ‘revealing confidential documents concerning the security of state’; whereas the Court of Appeals reversed the decree, deciding for Dündar to be sentenced to imprisonment from 15 years up to 20 years and for Gül to be acquitted.
Complying with the reversal, 14th Assize Court decided that “there is no concrete evidence that Gül has obtained the confidential information on the state with particular effort or was complicit in the act of Dündar in obtaining the information.” Proceeding of the lawsuit filed against Gül, Dündar and Republican People’s Party (CHP) MP Enis Berberoğlu due to ‘aiding an illegal organization’ related to the visuals of the ‘MIT Trucks’ is ongoing.
