Pembe Hayat [Pink Life] activist and web editor Çayan Azadi faced a homophobic attack by residents in Seyran, Ankara.
Speaking to BiaNet, Azadi stated, “I am constantly being followed and harassed. There is a hate crime and house invasion here. Since the police don’t listen to me, I will apply to the Prosecutor’s Office with my lawyer.” According to the news by Pembe Hayat, one person residing in the building next to Azadi’s apartment building as well as the person residing one floor above Azadi’s apartment have insulted Azadi around 23:30 at night, saying, “you immoral, if you keep your curtains open, we will watch your home” and “you are a faggot, you have no place here.” These people have walked towards Azadi afterwards with knives in their hands.
After the arrival of security forces in the crime scene, the attackers stated, “He is a faggot anyway, we have children in our homes, we don’t want them to see this.” The police have then told Azadi that “There is a place of our customs and traditions in the law, you have to close your curtains.” Not even listening to the complaint of the attacked activist, the police have taken the attackers to Esat Police station with the police vehicle so that they can file a criminal complaint against Azadi.
