Preparing regular annual reports on rights violations, Human Rights Association (IHD) launched the data for the past 16 years. According to the data, 7,588 people in Turkey were sentenced to a total of 23 thousand and 98 years of imprisonment since 2003, the year the Justice and Development Party (AKP) came into power, due to expressing their opinions.
According to the IHD data, which was compiled by Mezopotamya Agency, 528 people were sentenced to a total of 3,125 years of imprisonment within charges related to freedom of expression, only in 2017. 1,698 investigations were opened against 122 last year; investigations conducted against 1,103 turned into 204 separate lawsuits. IHD Central Executive Board member Atty. Hüsnü Öndül further indicated that the prison capacity in Turkey was 55 thousand people in 2005; which increased by a factor of five in twelve years.
