The Media and Legal Studies Association (MLSA) shared its report on 36 journalism and freedom of expression cases in September. Terrorism charges such as “making terrorist organisation propaganda” and “terrorist organization membership” constituted more than half of the charges imposed against the defendants in the aforementioned cases, in which 212 people stood trial. In this period, there was an increase in the accusations of “insulting a public official”, “insulting the President” and “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911”, especially against journalists. In the 6 cases that were concluded, 6 people, 5 of whom were journalists and 1 was a lawyer, were sentenced to a total of 24 years in prison on 3 different charges (“aiding a terrorist organization”, “propaganda”, “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations”). 1 case resulted in acquittal.
