Council of Higher Education (YÖK) stepped back from the “Social Gender Equality Attitude Document” published on March 8, World Women’s Day in 2016. The document involved methods on what could be done against violence and harassment against women in institutes of higher education, which guaranteed that the Council of Higher Education and all its constituents would act with sensitivity towards social gender equality. YÖK Chairman Yekta Saraç claimed that the notion of “Social Gender Equality” is leading to different perceptions and is “not in accordance with social values,” indicating that this notion will be removed from the document and the document will be revised in order for “ultimate values of the Turkish society, especially the notion of family” to be put forward in classes, conferences and seminars.
